But here are Family Stories introspective, narrative, personal stories told through image, word, and gesture. Is it great art? Maybe not, but it speaks to this artist. By manipulating the stories into visuals, details change; stories grow stronger and more true.

Some sculptures here are bodies with words, some are ‘pages,’ some are simply figures. Brody’s first book in 1997 told the stories of her generations in a familiar book-like sculpture. She continues to combine figures and words illuminating relationships just as she combines figures in gestural illustrations of relationships.

“Barkman portrays a natural-born rebel, who recalls her playful beginnings and proceeds to dramatize the constrictive gender roles and motherhood prescriptions that caused her (and Antigone) to search for a happiness that may always elude them. One of Brody’s sculptures participates in the play.
